1 - Matt Costa. This guy is so good. Way back in the day I bought his album Songs We Sing and it was literally an album that I could listen to every single song. Unlike James Blunt's album. Only good song on that one was "You're Beautiful" and the rest was un-listenable for me. But not Matt's stuff, or at least not the stuff I've heard. I like his sound... and the fact that he releases his albums on vinyl. Gosh I love how music sounds on vinyl.
2 - Oh my gosh! Did you hear the news?! Joy Behar is leaving The View! Thank You, Jesus! That woman is so anti-catholic and full of hate - wow. I barely watch that show because of how horrible they are towards Christians, conservatives, traditionalists but I'm pretty sure every time I have watched it Joy has said something incredibly insulting.
3 - On a related note, I was at my parish's moms' group this morning and made a very helpful declaration. NBC, ABC, CBS - listen up! What you need is a show like The Talk or The View except the panel of women need to be Christians - maybe even a Jew. And I mean orthodox, devout, faithful, Bible believing Christians. Get someone from a non-denom church, a Roman Catholic, I know an Apostolic Christian who would be perfect. There would still be disagreements and discussion - about contraception, married clergymen, politics, movies, celebrities, holidays, etc. These women would have to be good. Funny, intelligent, approachable, talented, good. I know there's The Catholic View for Women and The Gist but I'm talking about network tv and something that is not first and foremost Christian but primarily entertaining.
(I'm coming back to clarify this last statement. I think The Gist is entertaining - I never watch The Catholic View for Women so I can't comment on that one. What I meant to say was that the show's goal should be to be interesting and funny and intelligent and only be Christian in that the women presenting the information are Christian. I don't think it's primary goal should be to present a Christian message on tv that is also interesting, funny, and intelligent. I hope you understand the difference.)
4 - Did you enter the Giveaway? I don't want to tempt you on a Friday in Lent or anything, but let me give you one good reason why you should:
5 - I made pancakes for breakfast the other day. The boys left the table to play Mass and as L finished she eyed the one leftover pancake. "Mommy, can we use that for the Holy Eucharist?" When I told her yes she ran off, waving the pancake and yelling, "Ben! Mommy gave me a pancake for the Holy Eucharist!" When I was a kid we tore up bread, smooshed it flat, and used our thumbnail to make a cross on it.
6 - JF had two and a half hot dogs for breakfast. You should feel better about your mothering now.
Oh you don't? Well, Resa, my nine month old baby was just found eating the other half. That should make things better.
7 - We've started cloth diapering again. Resa wears them during the day (when they're clean) and Ben wears one at night. I'm hoping this will make a good dent in our grocery bill. We go through so many diapers with JF because he sharts all day long so I need a break in the diaper area of the budget.

ReplyDeleteI completely understand what you are saying about the TV show, and I 100% agree. That's what our world is missing. I think devout Christians are completely capable of talking about entertainment, world news, and hot topics, while remaining loyal to their faith and offering viewpoints from a Christian perspective. That's what WE do in every day life. Our society needs to SEE that in action!! How do we get this going, Bonnie!?!?

Did you know that news about Joy Behar yesterday? If not, that sure was prophetic of you to make comments about her. Good for you re: cloth diapers. I think doing a couple extra loads of laundry each week is better than buying more diapers.

ReplyDeleteI haven't unpacked our cloth diapers since we moved. mostly because we've had so much stomach flu, NO WAY i was washing those diapers. but every once in a while, i peek at that unopened box in Q's closet and see a couple more dollar signs...
I never watch the View. Hate it. Isn't Whoopi like that too? (love her movies) Plus, I hate how they always talk over each other and interrupt each other -- just makes me anxious.
Hot dogs for breakfast sounds kinda hawaiian to me. They love their spam over eggs and rice, and what is spam except rectangular, smooshed hot dogs? I say you're being multicultural with your kids. And I speak with authority, I did major in Anthropology.
Yes, Whoopi is bad, too. I feel like she should take all the money she made from the Sister Act movies and donate it to a homeless shelter or something. She doesn't like us but she'll tolerate us enough to make money.

I probably still won't watch The View, but I will have one less reason to totally boycott it. I only watched it for a few minutes a couple of times back at the very beginning of the show. That was enough to convince me that it was a worse waste of time than Mike Douglas back in the 1970's, at least his show wasn't totally hateful.

And I think you didn't get my point about the show. The women would be Christian but not the show. Like how my husband is a teacher in a public school or Jim Caveziel is a Catholic on Person of Interest. I think it could work.
And I like Christian music and think Marc alienates just as many as he rallies when he's snobby about such things.

I just feel as though sometimes people (including me!) can be unrealistic on what would actually work and what would not. Hrm. I don't know the answer. That's something to think about.

The fact is, I like some of that stuff, but I also like some of Ke$ha's stuff and he hates that, too.
DeleteJust like there's a whole underground music scene and a lot of it is much better than what's played on Top 40 there is an underground "Christian" music scene. Audrey Assad, Sara Groves, JJ Heller - those are 3 I think of who do write about God but also just write about life. And God is in every lyric because God is in their lives. I think the music Marc wants exists it's just that the masses aren't ready or able to consume it.
Also, how I think it could work that they women would be Christian but not the show... well, you just hire women who are Christian. Patricia Heaton (the wife from Everybody Loves Rayond) she could do it. Heck, even Kathie Lee Gifford could do it.
DeleteI don't agree with Oprah's version of Christianity but she still spoke about it and its presence was in most of her episodes, right? Same thing.
Think of The Talk - 5 women with different backgrounds, ethnicities, martial status, number of kids, etc. But they're all women sitting around the table talking. And the interview celebrities and do cooking segments, and talk about the holidays and headlines and tell funny stories from their personal lives. Why not do the same but intentionally hire women who are Christian and therefore won't be catty, gossips, rude, or talking about trashy things. Which, even Christian women can be catty gossips but hopefully you see what I'm saying.
Maybe it wouldn't work. But I think that if you got some quality producers, director, set, crew, and hostesses there just may be enough women who would tune in and keep coming back for something that was well done and in this world but not of it. I think it's worth a try at least.
