Also not shown: the black chapel veil I wore. It was a Christmas gift from a friend and I wore it for the first time ever at the Behold Conference yesterday. Today I wore it at our parish and, I'll tell you what, I felt a little self-conscious. I've been drawn to wearing a veil for years. I know every woman may have a different reasons for why or why not to wear a veil at Mass but for me it was pretty simple:
Putting a veil on, covering me head when I entered the chapel made me think of how God asks Moses to take off his sandals when he approaches the burning bush. It's holy ground, a sacred space, and to do something physically alter myself as a constant reminder of such, well, it has always seemed like it would be a powerful tool for me.
We'll see how it goes in the future. JP tried pulling it off my head a lot and succeeded once but all the other kids were great about it. And no one gave me the stink eye about it! (because I go to a great church which is filled with nice people.)

This is going to sound awful but I've considered veiling before and didn't pretty much solely because I don't want to wear a black veil and feel like it's totally clashing with my outfit. With my dark hair and fair complexion I go from normal to vampire pretty quickly so I don't own any black clothes at all. If you are a married woman do you have to wear a black veil? It feels like the fanciness of black lace against what in Florida is pretty much a year round pastel color palate when it comes to clothes would draw even more attention to me which is not what I want at mass.
ReplyDeleteBlack is the "traditional" color, but it's worth a small "t" so I say get some in alllllll the colors! I have a black one and I'm thinking of getting some more, maybe in blue, or purple, or gold, or something.
DeleteYou don't even technically have to wear a veil. The mantilla is the most recent tradition (with a small "t") for head covering in the Church, which we got from Spain. But throughout the centuries, acceptable headcoverings have merely been what women in that country or area wore to cover their heads. You can wear a kerchief, headscarf, bonnet, anything really, so long as you do it in an attitude of headcovering and not "what can I wear that will look the most absurd?" (For the attention-seeking types, not you!)

Afon sometimes tries to pull my veil off, so I've tied it under my chin before like a kerchief! I have the very same reasons for when I wear a veil (which depends entirely on if I remember it or if it's still in my purse when I'm dashing in the church doors), and it's so lovely to sort of "dress the altar" of the the temple of the Holy Spirit in that way. :P
ReplyDeleteI've got gray nail polish on, too! Is this a trend I didn't notice, or we do just have awesome taste? The Insta-Dry, though, I've found that to be kind of gunky in the past. Maybe it was just old?

ReplyDeleteHow funny. I have been discerning wearing a veil for about 2 years now. I really wanted to make sure I wore a veil on my heart first and that I was doing this for Him, and no other reason. I also didn't want to look out of place during a OF Mass, and was worried that I would get stares of judgement from others.
Finally, through much prayer, I felt that push of "JUST DO IT ALREADY". I wore a veil for the first time in Adoration a few days before the Behold conference. So, Mass at the Behold conference was my first time as well :-). I felt such a sigh of relief (?) that you put one on too.
I think it is beautiful, and for me wraps me in Gods love and prepares me to receive the Eucharist.
